Thinking Long-term in a Short-term world

Great inspirational event last week, hosted by Harvard Business Review and University of Warwick – Warwick Business School at the Shard. Dorie Clark (dorieclark.com), author of The Long Game, gave a talk about 7 Ways to become a Long term thinker in a Short term world.

Although almost all leaders recognise the need to ‘be strategic’, most also acknowledge they don’t have enough time – Dorie – like David Allen – suggested we think more about ‘(mental) space’ than ‘time’ – being strategic isn’t about 3-day off-site retreats.

Her stories really resonated – especially the one about filling your diary with meetings you really don’t need to attend, and processing low-value tasks (e.g. quickly responding to emails) which might serve others, but perhaps not so much your own needs – sound familiar? Let’s all commit to Saying No to Good Things, Watching out for the Raindrops and Deciding what to be bad at!
